In old Norway on Christmas Eve, rommegrot (sour cream porridge) was served as a special treat for the family. The Julenisse (Christmas Elf) peeks in the window, hoping there will be some left for him. As the story was told, the farmer set out a bowl of rommegrot in the barn for the Julenissen on Christmas Eve to keep him in good graces. If the porridge was good, the Julenissen would be friendly to the family and protect the farm for the coming year. The bowl was always empty in the morning, but curiously, the family cat had a satisfied smile on his face!
